Optimal strategies or tragic flaws

Many games have clear objectives or conditions of victory. In a role-playing game, an unbalanced character, or a series of tragic flaws are as central to the story as the victories. How do you get players to sometimes embrace optimization and sometimes eschew it in favour of the elusive experiences at the table?
